Davos is a mountain town in eastern Switzerland, best known as the host of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, according to Swiss authorities and the forum’s organizers. Located in the canton of Graubünden, Davos sits high in the Swiss Alps and becomes a focal point each January when global political, business, and academic leaders gather there.
The town of Davos lies about 150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of Zurich and is accessible by train, road, and nearby regional airports. At an elevation of roughly 1,560 meters (5,120 feet), it is one of Europe’s highest towns and is known for its cold winters and alpine landscape.
Davos has a permanent population of around 11,000 residents, according to Swiss government data, but its global profile rises sharply during major international events. The most prominent is the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, which has been held there almost every year since 1971.
During the forum, heads of state, CEOs, central bank leaders, and civil society representatives meet to discuss global economic trends, geopolitical risks, climate policy, and technological change. Swiss federal and cantonal authorities coordinate extensive security and logistics operations during the event, reflecting its international significance.
Outside of the forum, Davos is a year-round resort town, historically known for winter sports and as a center for medical and climate research. It also hosts conferences and cultural events throughout the year, though none approach the scale or global attention of the World Economic Forum.
Davos’s location in a politically neutral country and its relative isolation are often cited by organizers as reasons for its continued use as a venue for high-level international dialogue. The town’s infrastructure, including the Davos Congress Centre, was developed in part to support these large gatherings.
As global leaders continue to meet there annually, Davos remains a small alpine town with an outsized role in international economic and political discussions.
