Detroit Lions offensive tackle Taylor Decker has requested and received his release from the team after 10 seasons, ending a long tenure with the franchise, according to reports and statements posted by the player. The 32-year-old lineman announced the move Friday, weeks after indicating he planned to return for the 2026 NFL season following discussions with the organization.
Taylor Decker said in a message on social media that contract discussions with the Lions had recently taken place but did not lead to an agreement. The veteran lineman expressed appreciation for his time in Detroit and said he hoped the departure would be handled amicably.
The Lions selected Taylor Decker with the 16th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He quickly became a cornerstone of Detroit’s offensive line, starting nearly every game he played over the past decade.
During his time with the franchise, Taylor Decker started more than 140 games and helped anchor an offensive unit that reached the playoffs multiple times and captured division titles during the team’s recent resurgence.
The departure follows a period of uncertainty around the veteran’s future. After the 2025 season, Decker acknowledged he had considered retirement while managing a shoulder injury that limited his practice participation and required extensive rehabilitation.
Earlier in February, Decker confirmed he intended to return for an 11th NFL season with Detroit, using a social media post referencing Year 11 to signal his decision.
However, reports indicated the team and the player had recently discussed possible contract adjustments. Those talks reportedly stalled, leading to Decker requesting his release and entering free agency ahead of the 2026 season.
Taylor Decker had been under contract through 2027 after signing a three-year, $60 million extension with Detroit in 2024.
His exit leaves the Lions facing questions about the future of their offensive line, particularly at the left tackle position that Taylor Decker had held since his rookie season.
Detroit has not publicly detailed immediate plans for replacing the veteran lineman as the team prepares for the upcoming offseason and free agency period.
