Minneapolis, Minnesota — Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Wednesday, Jan. 7, during a federal operation in south Minneapolis, according to local officials, family members and law enforcement sources. Good died after being struck by gunfire in her vehicle just blocks from her home, sparking protests and political dispute over the circumstances of the encounter.
Video footage and statements from federal authorities indicate ICE agents were conducting enforcement actions in the area when Good’s vehicle was involved in a confrontation with officers, prompting an agent to fire what Homeland Security Department officials described as defensive shots. Local police and city leaders, however, dispute parts of the federal account and say they are reviewing the incident.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, identified her daughter to The Minnesota Star Tribune, saying family members were notified of her death late Wednesday morning. Ganger described Good as a compassionate person who was not part of any protest against ICE agents.
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security have said a federal officer fired at Good after what they alleged was an attempt to use her vehicle against officers during the operation. Local authorities and video reviewed by city officials have raised questions about that characterization, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has publicly criticized the federal account, calling for restraint and further review.
Good was a mother, writer and community member; public records and family accounts describe her as living in the Twin Cities with her partner and children. Social media profiles and university records show she had interests in poetry and creative writing.
News of Good’s death prompted gatherings and vigils in Minneapolis and drew responses from community leaders and public officials, including calls from some state figures for a complete investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
Federal and local investigations into the shooting are ongoing, and the city and state officials have said they will cooperate with inquiries by oversight entities into the use of force. The story is developing.
