William Bill Stevenson, the ex-husband of former U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, was indicted on a first-degree murder charge Tuesday in the death of his wife in Wilmington, Delaware, authorities said, drawing national attention due to his past marriage to the educator and political figure.

Stevenson, 77, was arraigned following a grand jury’s decision to charge him in connection with the December 28, 2025 death of his 64-year-old wife, Linda Stevenson, according to the Delaware Department of Justice. Police responded to a reported domestic dispute at the couple’s Oak Hill residence late that night and found Linda unresponsive; life-saving efforts by officers and first responders were unsuccessful, officials said.

The weeks-long investigation culminated in Stevenson’s arrest on Monday after a grand jury returned the indictment, and he was held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $500,000 bail, which he did not post. Authorities have not publicly released the official cause and manner of Linda Stevenson’s death pending forensic findings.

Stevenson and Jill Biden were married from 1970 until their divorce in 1975, prior to her marriage to Joe Biden, the 46th president of the United States. The White House and Jill Biden have not issued public statements regarding the indictment, and there is no indication that Jill Biden is involved in or connected to the ongoing legal proceedings.

Linda Stevenson was remembered by family and community members as a mother, grandmother and small business owner; her obituary highlighted her personal and professional contributions. The case remains under investigation as prosecutors prepare for further legal action, with no trial date announced.
