The Kansas City Chiefs have formally requested permission from the Chicago Bears to interview running backs coach Eric Bieniemy for their offensive coordinator vacancy, multiple league sources said Monday. The move comes as the Chiefs navigate an early offseason shakeup following their 2025 campaign, with incumbent coordinator Matt Nagy expected to pursue head coaching opportunities elsewhere.

Eric Bieniemy, 56, is in his first season as the Bears’ running backs coach after extensive experience as an NFL offensive coordinator and position coach, according to team and league records. He previously served as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator from 2018 through 2022 under head coach Andy Reid, helping steer one of the league’s most potent offenses during a period that included multiple deep playoff runs and Super Bowl victories.

The Chiefs’ request to speak with Bieniemy is part of broader offseason planning as they anticipate changes on Andy Reid’s coaching staff. Nagy’s contract expires this year, and he is widely regarded as a leading candidate for several head coaching openings around the league, sources familiar with the discussions said. Should Nagy depart, Kansas City has signaled an interest in exploring candidates with both familiarity with Reid’s system and play-calling experience.

Bieniemy’s NFL coaching resume spans more than two decades, highlighted by his tenure in Kansas City where the Chiefs’ offense consistently ranked near the top of the league in yards and scoring. He also held offensive coordinator duties with the Washington Commanders and at UCLA before joining the Bears’ staff for the 2025 season.

Chicago Bears officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the interview request, which requires approval under league rules because Bieniemy is under contract. The Bears concluded their 2025 season this month and are expected to enter a period of coaching evaluations and potential staff movement.

If the Chiefs are granted permission and proceed with an interview, Bieniemy would be considered a leading internal option for the offense leader role due to his prior work with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and familiarity with Kansas City’s offensive philosophy. League personnel analysts say that continuity and prior success in the system are key factors for the Chiefs’ offseason decision-making.
