Veteran broadcaster Don Lemon said his new interview program on X was canceled in March 2024, days after he recorded a wide-ranging conversation with platform owner Elon Musk. Lemon said X executives informed him the show would not move forward, ending a partnership announced earlier this year as part of the platform’s push into long-form video.
Don Lemon announced the deal in January, describing the program as an independent talk show to be distributed exclusively on X. The show was expected to feature interviews with newsmakers and public figures following Lemon’s departure from CNN in 2023.
In a video posted to X, Lemon said the cancellation came shortly after his interview with Musk, which covered topics including content moderation, immigration, race, and the platform’s business strategy. Lemon said he was told the decision was made by X leadership but that no specific reason was provided.
X confirmed the cancellation in a statement, saying it had decided not to proceed with the partnership. The company said it remains committed to expanding video offerings on the platform but did not address details of the Musk interview.
Musk later said on X that Don Lemon approach was not aligned with the platform’s expectations, describing the interview as adversarial. He said X encourages a wide range of content but reserves the right to make programming decisions.
The episode underscores ongoing tensions around editorial independence and content moderation on X, which Musk acquired in 2022. The platform has sought to attract journalists and creators as it competes with YouTube and traditional media outlets for video audiences.
Lemon said he plans to release the interview independently and continue producing content without platform exclusivity. The story is developing.
