Passengers and airport staff were evacuated from Kansas City International Airport on Sunday after authorities received a report of a potential security threat, prompting a large law enforcement response and temporary disruption to flight operations. Officials said the alert was reported late Sunday morning, leading airport police and federal agents to clear parts of the terminal as a precaution while investigators worked to determine the credibility of the threat.
The Kansas City Aviation Department said it became aware of the situation around 11:15 a.m. local time. As a safety measure, sections of the terminal were evacuated while airport police coordinated with federal authorities.
An aviation department spokesperson said airport police are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to “substantiate any potential threat.” Officials did not immediately confirm the nature of the threat or whether it was considered credible.
Witnesses at the airport described a rapid evacuation after airport personnel instructed travelers to leave the terminal. Some passengers were escorted outside and onto the tarmac as police units and K-9 teams responded inside the facility, according to travelers at the scene.
Flights that landed after the alert were temporarily held on taxiways instead of approaching gates while authorities assessed the situation, officials said.
Images shared by local media showed travelers being directed away from gates and aircraft as security personnel secured the building and surrounding areas. Authorities have not reported injuries linked to the evacuation.
Kansas City\ Airport, often referred to as KCI or MCI, is the region’s primary commercial aviation hub and serves millions of passengers annually. The airport operates a single-terminal complex that opened in 2023 and handles dozens of daily domestic flights.
Authorities have not released details about the source of the reported threat or when normal operations may fully resume. Investigators continued to evaluate the situation with federal and local law enforcement agencies.
