Green Bay Packers defensive end Rashan Gary faces an uncertain future with the franchise as the team evaluates roster and salary cap decisions ahead of the 2026 NFL season. Reports and league analysis indicate the Packers could consider releasing, trading, or restructuring Gary’s contract due to his high cap hit and recent performance decline.
Rashan Gary, a former first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has been a key part of Green Bay’s defensive front for several seasons. The 28-year-old edge rusher signed a four-year contract extension in 2023 and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024, but his production dropped during the latter part of the 2025 season.
According to league coverage and team analysis, Gary’s contract carries a salary-cap figure of more than $28 million for the 2026 season. Releasing him would save the Packers roughly $11 million while leaving approximately $17 million in dead cap, a financial factor that has reportedly prompted internal discussions about the team’s defensive roster structure.
Rashan Gary began the 2025 season strongly, recording 7.5 sacks in the first seven games. However, he went without a sack over the final stretch of the regular season, raising concerns about consistency in Green Bay’s pass rush production.
The former University of Michigan standout has played his entire professional career with the Packers. Since entering the league, Gary has accumulated more than 40 career sacks and over 270 total tackles, establishing himself as one of the team’s primary defensive playmakers.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has previously acknowledged that the organization must evaluate several roster decisions during the offseason, including the status of veteran defensive players with significant salary-cap implications.
Any move involving Rashan Gary could affect the team’s defensive depth at edge rusher as Green Bay prepares for the upcoming league year and potential free-agency activity.
The Packers have not issued an official announcement regarding Gary’s status, and league reporters have indicated that multiple options — including a trade or contract restructuring — remain under consideration.
