Chicago public School Closings and several suburban districts canceled in-person classes Tuesday as a powerful winter storm brought heavy snow, ice, and hazardous travel conditions across northeastern Illinois, according to school officials. The closures affect tens of thousands of students and staff, with administrators citing safety concerns for buses, pedestrians, and school facilities.
Chicago School Closings said the decision was made early Tuesday following overnight snowfall and forecasts calling for continued accumulation and high winds. Several districts in Cook, DuPage, and Lake counties also announced full-day closures or a shift to remote learning, local education authorities confirmed.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for the region, reporting snow totals of up to eight inches in some areas, along with reduced visibility during the morning commute. City officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and said road crews were working to clear major routes.
District leaders said extracurricular activities, including athletics and after-school programs, were also canceled. Some districts kept buildings closed entirely, while others allowed limited staff access for essential operations.
Parents were notified through automated alerts, district websites, and social media early Tuesday. Officials said meal distribution programs would operate on a modified schedule where possible.
